Lima: The mountain gateway

La Ciudad de los Reyes

Lima was founded in 1535 on Epiphany Day and called the City of Kings — until locals' centuries-old term for the area around the Rímac River, Limaq, took over.

Lima's place in the world

Lima sits at 12° S latitude, placing it in the Southern Hemisphere just south of the equator.
Lima's longitude is 77° W, which places it roughly in line with New York, US, and Santiago, Chile. But unlike those cities, Lima enjoys milder temperatures thanks to the cooling Humboldt Current.

Common questions

Lima earned that name because Spanish colonists founded it around the Christian feast of the Three Kings and dedicated the new city to their reigning king, not because any monarch ever lived there. The nickname stuck for decades before Lima took over, a name most historians trace back to a Quechua word tied to the Rímac River valley.

Lima rarely gets rain because a cold ocean current chills the air just offshore, keeping it too stable to rise and form rain clouds before it reaches the coast. Trade winds drop their moisture over the Andes long before they get here, so what settles over Lima instead is a thick, damp fog.

Lima earned that title because centuries of Spanish, Andean, African, and Asian immigrants settled in the same city and folded their cooking into one shared food culture instead of staying separate. Chefs later refined that mix into a distinct cuisine that international critics singled out for recognition.

Lima grew explosively because millions of people left difficult conditions in the Andean countryside from the 1940s onward, and later during a period of rural conflict, to search for work and schooling in the capital. Much of that growth happened informally, with new arrivals building entire neighborhoods on the desert hills ringing the city.
